BOURNE — Richard Warren Bourne, of Bourne and longtime resident of Medfield, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, after a long illness. He was 82. He was the husband of Virginia Seely Bourne, formerly of Wellesley. Born in Waban, he was the son of the late Phillip B. and Elna Trowbridge Bourne of Waban and Bourne. He was raised in Waban and graduated from Newton High School in 1944, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II and the Korean War. After an honorable discharge in 1954, he attended Boston University, where he graduated in 1957 with a master's degree in education. An educator for his entire career, he worked for the Wellesley school system as a science teacher and then as an assistant principal for the junior high. In 1973, he was employed by the Joseph P. Keefe Technical High School in Framingham, where he taught health. He remained at Keefe Tech until his retirement in 1986. A longtime summer resident of Ellsworth, Maine, on his beloved Branch Lake, he loved gardening, golf, fishing and working "in the woods." Besides his wife, Richard is survived by his children, Susan and her husband Paul Rylander of North Kingstown, R.I., and Richard D. and his wife Lynne Bourne of Loudonville, N.Y. He has two loving grandsons, Nicholas R. Bourne and Jonathan M. Bourne, both of Loudonville. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving brother, Phillip B. Bourne Jr. of Westwood. A memorial service will be held at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Branch Pond Association, Bourne Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1087, Ellsworth, ME 04605-1087.

Harold Edward Hines of Meredith, N.H., formerly of Wellesley, died on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at the CRVNA Hospice House. He was 90. Born on Sept. 17, 1918, in East Boston, he was the son of Thomas and Elydia (Stoltz) Hines Sr. He attended the Brookline Schools in Brookline, until attending Clark Prep School in Hanover, N.H.  Following graduation from Boston University, Harold “Bud” enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific during WWII as a second lieutenant, leading to the Presidential Unit Citation and five battle stars for campaigns at Tulagi, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Bougainville and Midway.  He rose to the rank of major before the hostilities ceased in 1945.
Upon returning from the war, Bud earned a master’s degree in education from his alma mater, in preparation for a career in the teacher-coach field, all at Wellesley. In fall 1946 Bud started to teach physical education and coached sophomore football, basketball and baseball. In 1947, he became the varsity ice hockey coach and remained so for 22 years. He also served as football trainer for 20 years. In the fall of 1968 he became director of Physical Education and Athletics for grades 7-12 for the Town of Wellesley.  He retired in June 1980 and moved to Meredith. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Joan C. Hines. His surviving family includes his wife of 64 years, M. Patricia (King); his sons, John R. Hines of South Natick and Richard J. Hines and his wife Darleen of Belmont, N.H.; his grandchildren, Kim, Lisa, Patty, Erin and Jason; three step-grandchildren, Devon, Kyle and Shelby Reed; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Thomas E. Hines Jr. and his wife, Bev of Windsor, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 300 NH Route 25, Meredith, N.H., on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Concord Regional Visiting Nurse’s Association Hospice House, PO Box 1797, Concord, NH 03302-1797, or Pine Rock Manor, 3 Denny Hill Road, Warner, NH 03278. Local arrangements are under the direction of George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, Wellesley.
